Eggs-actly How Much? A Tale of Inflation

Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.

Who would have thought that an egg could be a catalyst for a trip down memory lane? Not me, until today.

A boy buying eggs at a local grocery store.

I was at the grocery store, minding my own business, when I reached for a carton of eggs. As I glanced at the price tag, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. Seven to eight rupees for a single egg! In a world where everything seems to be spiraling upwards, this price hike felt particularly jarring.

I remember a time, not so long ago (or so it feels), when an egg was a mere two rupees. It was a different era, a simpler time. Two rupees could buy you a decent amount of candy, a refreshing glass of sugarcane juice, or even a ticket for a local bus ride.

It’s astonishing how something as ordinary as an egg can become a barometer of inflation. Every time I buy eggs now, I can’t help but do the mental math. How many more rupees am I shelling out compared to those carefree days of yore? It’s a small amount, sure, but it’s a constant reminder of the ever-increasing cost of living.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the numbers and lament about the good old days, there’s also a certain charm to this gradual change. It’s a testament to time passing, to the economy evolving, and to our own personal growth. Perhaps the next generation will look back at this era and wonder how we ever managed with such low egg prices.

So, the next time you’re at the grocery store and the price of eggs makes you do a double take, remember, it’s not just about the cost of sustenance. It’s a snapshot of our collective journey, a tiny piece of the larger economic puzzle. And hey, maybe it’s time to start investing in chicken farms. Just kidding (or am I?).
