Three Books That Have Shaped My Perspective
What’s something most people don’t understand?
A concept that many people find challenging to understand is Relativity Theory. It’s a fundamental theory in physics developed by Albert Einstein, which describes the relationship between space and time. The theory has two main parts: the special theory of relativity and the general theory of relativity.
The special theory of relativity, introduced first, deals with objects moving at constant speeds, particularly those approaching the speed of light. It introduces the idea that time can slow down or speed up, depending on how fast you are moving compared to something else. This leads to phenomena such as time dilation, where time literally slows down for an object in motion.
The general theory of relativity expands on this by including acceleration and gravity. It suggests that massive objects like planets and stars can warp the fabric of space-time, creating what we feel as gravity. This theory has been proven through various experiments and observations, such as the bending of light from stars by the sun’s gravity.
Here’s a simplified explanation :
“Imagine space-time as a trampoline, and planets and stars as heavy balls placed on it. The balls create dips in the trampoline, and these dips are what we experience as gravity. Now, if you roll a smaller ball (like a spaceship) around a large ball (like Earth), it will spiral around the dip created by the large ball, similar to how planets orbit stars. This is the essence of general relativity: gravity is the warping of space and time by mass.”
